Hong Kong Holds State Funeral for First Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa

Hong Kong held a state funeral and public memorial on September 20, 2026, for Tung Chee-hwa, the city's first chief executive following the 1997 handover from British rule. Tung, a former shipping tycoon, died on September 8 at age 89. His casket, draped in the Chinese national flag, was moved from the Hong Kong Funeral Home to the Cape Collinson Crematorium.

The service was attended by approximately 200 guests, including Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu and high-ranking officials from Beijing. Shi Taifeng, a member of the Communist Party Politburo, delivered a eulogy describing Tung as a "renowned patriot" and an "outstanding contributor to the one-country, two-systems framework." President Xi Jinping also expressed deep grief following the passing of the former leader.

Tung's legacy remains divisive. Supporters highlight his management of the Asian financial crisis, the 2003 SARS epidemic, and the 1997 avian flu outbreak. However, critics recall the mass protests against a proposed anti-treason law that led to his resignation in 2005 for health reasons. Following his leadership, Tung served as vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. International tributes included praise from former U.S. Ambassador Max Baucus for Tung's commitment to people-to-people diplomacy between China and the United States.
