Four Candidates Compete for Texas Comptroller Position
Don Huffines and Sarah Eckhardt lead a four-person race for Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts following the appointment of Huffines by Governor Greg Abbott.
Four candidates are competing for the position of Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts in the 2026 election. The seat opened in 2025 after Glenn Hegar departed to become the chancellor of Texas A&M. Governor Greg Abbott appointed Don Huffines, a former state senator and real estate developer, to serve as the incumbent until the election.
Huffines, running as a MAGA Republican, has pledged to refuse a state salary and audit government spending. He faces Democratic nominee Sarah Eckhardt, a current state senator and former judge who is campaigning to audit school vouchers and root out government corruption. The office is currently tasked with implementing a $1 billion school voucher program, in addition to its standard duties of managing state contracts, estimating revenue, and collecting sales taxes.
The race also includes Libertarian candidate V. Alonzo Echavarria-Garza, the city manager of Hearne, and Green Party candidate Shehla Faizi, a podcaster.
