Trump Organization Files Trademarks for Airport Renaming and Merchandise

The Trump Organization, through its unit DTTM Operations, filed trademark applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the names "President Donald J. Trump International Airport," "Donald J. Trump International Airport," and "DJT." These filings coincide with legislation passed by the Florida Legislature to rename Palm Beach International Airport after the president, a bill that now awaits Governor Ron DeSantis' signature.

The trademarks extend beyond naming rights to include airport-related merchandise such as luggage, apparel, flight suits, jewelry, and security slippers. The Trump Organization claims the filings are intended to protect against "bad actors" and misuse of the president's name, which it described as the most infringed trademark in the world. Spokesperson Kimberly Banza stated that the president and his family will not receive royalties or financial consideration from the Palm Beach renaming.

Legal experts have described the move as unprecedented for a sitting president's private company to seek trademark rights for public landmarks. In Florida, State Senator Shevrin Jones raised ethical concerns regarding personal monetary benefits, while State Senator Debbie Mayfield defended the bill, stating there is no cost to the airport for the name change. While the estimated renaming cost for the Palm Beach airport is $5.5 million, current funding proposals fall short. Separately, Republicans in North Carolina have introduced legislation to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after Donald Trump, though officials warned this could cause operational confusion.
