U.S. Energy Department Funds Alaska Power Line Project

The U.S. Energy Department is providing $150 million to build 223 miles of electrical transmission lines across Alaska.

The U.S. Department of Energy will announce $150 million in funding on Monday to construct 223 miles of new electrical transmission lines in Alaska. The project, which has a total estimated cost of $400 million, will connect the Beluga power station on the southern coast to Healy in the state's interior. The new lines will serve major ports and reach nearly three-quarters of the state's population.

This investment arrives as part of a series of economic announcements by the Donald Trump administration leading up to the November midterm elections. The funding is being highlighted amid voter concerns regarding the war with Iran and high gasoline prices.

The announcement coincides with a visit to Alaska by Vice President JD Vance. Vance is visiting the state to rally support for Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, who is currently engaged in a tight reelection contest against Democratic candidate Mary Peltola.
