U.S. Government Takes Ownership Stakes in 30 Strategic Companies
The United States federal government has invested in or taken ownership positions in 30 companies to bolster national security and reduce foreign dependence.
The federal government of the United States has taken or proposed ownership positions in as many as 30 companies since June 2025 to bolster national and economic security. This industrial policy shift targets critical industries including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and pharmaceuticals to reduce reliance on foreign supplies.
Major actions include the government becoming the largest single shareholder of Intel by converting CHIPS Act grant money into an $8.9 billion investment for a nearly 10% stake. Washington also invested $400 million in MP Materials and secured a golden share in U.S. Steel, which grants the government veto rights over major corporate decisions.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer have linked these strategies to the intellectual influence of Alexander Hamilton. Bessent stated that economic security begins with the capacity to scale critical industries.
