Mallikarjun Kharge Accuses Narendra Modi of Insulting Opposition Leaders

Mallikarjun Kharge accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of avoiding direct communication with opposition leaders and misleading the public regarding women's reservation and delimitation proposals.

Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of insulting opposition leaders by refusing to respond personally to their correspondence. Speaking in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, Kharge alleged that the Prime Minister uses Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju as a mere intermediary without granting him real authority.

Kharge asserted that the government is acting in an arbitrary and high-handed manner regarding the Constitution and national delimitation proposals. He demanded an all-party meeting to discuss these proposals before new legislation is introduced, noting that he has written four letters to the Prime Minister seeking such a meeting. He further claimed the government could implement the 33 percent women's reservation immediately using the current strength of the House, rather than waiting for delimitation.

Kharge characterized the government's delay as a ploy to mislead the public and malign the opposition, highlighting that the government failed to secure a two-thirds majority for a Delimitation Constitutional Amendment Bill on April 17, 2026. In response, Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the government has made repeated efforts to consult the opposition, citing personal discussions with both Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, as well as multiple letters sent to Kharge between March and April 2026.
