Trump Requests $1.5 Trillion Defense Budget Amid Readiness Shortfalls

The Trump Administration is requesting $67 billion in supplemental Pentagon funding and a $1.5 trillion defense budget for the coming year to address critical military readiness shortfalls. These deficits stem from the costs of a naval blockade and ongoing conflict in Iran, which have left the U.S. Navy between $6 billion and $8 billion short for current fiscal year operations.

Military planners warn that the United States lacks sufficient air cover for prolonged conflicts with China or Russia. This vulnerability was highlighted during the Iran conflict, where half of the U.S. Patriot interceptor stockpile was depleted within weeks. To counter this, the administration is seeking 3,200 advanced Patriot interceptors and $17 billion for the Golden Dome air defense program.

Funding for these initiatives currently relies on a reconciliation process blocked by Democrats in the United States Congress. General Michael Guetlein warned that the Golden Dome program cannot exist without the requested funds. Republicans are now under pressure to secure the funding before upcoming elections to prevent further military defunding.
