EU Extends Russia Sanctions for One Week Amid Usmanov Dispute

European Union ambassadors extended existing sanctions against Russia for only one week following demands from France and Slovakia to delist Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov. The sanctions list, comprising roughly 3,000 individuals and entities, requires unanimous agreement from all 27 member states for renewal.

While 25 member states sought to maintain the restrictions on Usmanov, France blocked a longer extension, citing national security and the need to respond to international partners. This short-term extension acts as a temporary truce until a follow-up meeting scheduled for September 22.

Reports suggest France may be negotiating the release of businessman Martin Ryan, who is currently jailed in Azerbaijan on espionage charges, in exchange for Usmanov's removal. Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan have previously lobbied for the tycoon's delisting. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey has specifically advocated for Usmanov, framing the move as a way to strengthen ties within the Turkic world and open Central Asian countries to the West.
