R. Kelly Requests Sentence Commutation from President Donald Trump
Robert Kelly has petitioned President Donald Trump to commute his 30-year sentence for sex crimes amid allegations of a murder plot within federal prison.
Convicted singer Robert Kelly has filed a formal request with the Office of the Pardon Attorney asking President Donald Trump to commute his 30-year sentence for sex crimes, racketeering, and sex trafficking. Kelly, who is incarcerated at FCI Butner in North Carolina and not eligible for release until 2045 or 2046, is seeking a sentence reduction rather than a full pardon.
The request follows a series of claims by Kelly's attorney, Beau B. Brindley, who alleges that federal authorities conspired to steal Kelly's mail and that prison officials recruited an inmate, Mikeal Glenn Stine of the Aryan Brotherhood, to kill the singer. Brindley also claims Kelly was placed in solitary confinement after a motion for a new trial became public and that he has been denied necessary surgery for blood clots.
White House officials have downplayed the clemency bid, characterizing it as a random submission through a public portal. While the administration noted the president is the ultimate decider, officials stated the clemency review team is not tracking the request at this time. Simultaneously, a federal judge in Chicago is considering a motion for a new trial based on allegations of prosecutorial misconduct, though prosecutors have dismissed these claims as a fishing expedition.
