John Swinney Urges MSPs to Endorse Scotland's Right to Decide

First Minister John Swinney is calling on Members of the Scottish Parliament to unanimously endorse a motion stating that Scotland is a nation with the right to decide its own future. Swinney argues that the movement for self-determination is gathering pace and that the UK government's position of vetoing democracy has become unsustainable.

This legislative push follows a meeting in Cardiff where Swinney, Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth, and Sinn Féin vice president Michelle O’Neill signed a memorandum of understanding. The agreement aims to pressure Prime Minister Andy Burnham into agreeing to independence referendums across the devolved nations.

The UK government has rejected the proposal, declaring that another referendum is off limits to avoid distractions from economic growth and the cost of living. Scottish Labour deputy leader Jackie Baillie dismissed the motion as a gimmick, accusing the Scottish National Party of grandstanding rather than addressing critical issues such as health, education, and child poverty.
