Rahul Gandhi Demands Amit Shah's Removal Over Student Protest Crackdown

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi demanded a Supreme Court probe and Amit Shah's sacking following alleged police violence against student protesters in New Delhi.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi demanded the removal of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and a Supreme Court-monitored probe during a Lok Sabha session on July 29, 2026. The demands followed a security forces crackdown on student protesters during a Cockroach Janta Party-led march in New Delhi on July 20. Gandhi alleged that Shah ordered the use of pellet guns, lathis, and police firing, asserting that the minister was either "culpable" or "incompetent."

The Bharatiya Janata Party rejected these claims, stating that no firing occurred and only tear gas was deployed. Minister of State Jitendra Singh clarified that the legal authority to order firing rests with magistrates rather than Union ministers. Government representatives, including Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, called Gandhi's remarks "highly objectionable" and demanded an unconditional apology. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra further accused Gandhi of lying about the size of Amit Shah's convoy to incite anarchy.

Despite the confrontation and disruptions, the Lok Sabha passed the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, by a voice vote. Speaker Om Birla intervened to steer the session, stating the Home Minister was not the subject of the debate. During the uproar, Gandhi also criticized the RSS for allegedly capturing the education system and influencing university leadership.
