Trump Targets Federal Reserve Independence and Political Opponents
President Donald Trump launched criminal investigations into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and targeted other political rivals, sparking accusations of authoritarianism from Senator Bernie Sanders.
President Donald Trump has launched a series of actions challenging the independence of the Federal Reserve and the legal standing of his political opponents. The administration initiated a Department of Justice criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, which included the issuance of a grand jury subpoena. Trump has repeatedly criticized Powell for maintaining interest rates higher than the president's preference and has considered removing him before his term ends in May.
Powell defended the autonomy of the central bank, stating that the threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting rates based on public service rather than presidential preference. In a separate action, the Supreme Court blocked Trump's attempt to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook following mortgage fraud allegations, which Cook denies.
Senator Bernie Sanders condemned these actions as an attempt to move the United States toward an authoritarian society. Sanders highlighted the prosecution of Powell and New York Attorney General Letitia James, as well as a Department of Defense investigation into Senator Mark Kelly, whom Sanders alleges Trump threatened with execution.
Beyond the Federal Reserve, the administration has pursued policies including unilateral tariffs and demands for government ownership in private companies. On January 3, the U.S. military seized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to secure control of Venezuela's oil resources, linking foreign policy directly to business interests.
