Min Aung Hlaing Visits Russia to Strengthen Strategic Ties
Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing visited Moscow to meet President Vladimir Putin and secure economic and security cooperation amid ongoing Western sanctions.
Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing departed Naypyidaw on August 17, 2026, for an official visit to Moscow to meet with President Vladimir Putin. This trip marks his first visit to Russia since assuming the presidency in April following elections that United Nations experts and Western nations dismissed as neither free nor fair.
During the visit, the two leaders discussed security, foreign policy, and economic projects. Key initiatives include Russian plans to construct a nuclear power plant, oil refineries, and a seaport within the Dawei Special Economic Zone. Russia's Economic Development Minister Maxim Reshetnikov stated that Moscow is prepared to increase supplies of equipment, fertilizers, and oil products to Myanmar while boosting imports of textiles and agricultural goods.
Russia remains a primary strategic ally and arms supplier to Myanmar, providing fighter jets and military training. This diplomatic effort is part of a broader campaign by Min Aung Hlaing to seek international legitimacy and regain diplomatic standing following the 2021 military takeover, following recent trips to India, China, Laos, and Thailand.
