Trump Threatens Iran as Both Sides Fight for Hormuz Control

Donald Trump threatens massive missile strikes against Iran after the new supreme leader vows revenge for his father's death and closes the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States and Iran have entered a phase of managed instability following the February 28 death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes. Donald Trump declared a mid-June ceasefire over after Iran targeted U.S. military sites in Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar, and Oman, and attacked commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. In response, U.S. Central Command launched three rounds of strikes hitting over 300 targets within Iran.

Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has remained largely absent from public view due to reported facial and limb injuries sustained in the February strike, vowed that avenging his father's death is a "divine mission" and a "demand of the nation." Trump responded by claiming 1,000 missiles are "locked and loaded" and threatened to "completely decimate" Iran if the government acts on alleged assassination plots against him, which Israeli intelligence reported to U.S. officials.

The conflict has escalated into a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran indefinitely closed the waterway to commercial passage, asserting sovereign management and demanding the normalization of oil exports. Trump countered by declaring the U.S. the "guardian angel" of the strait, announcing a naval blockade of Iran and a proposed 20 percent toll on passing ships. While Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Qatari mediators have attempted diplomatic outreach in Oman, Tehran maintains that the strait will remain closed until sanctions are lifted and U.S. intervention ceases.
