Ukrainian F-16 Achieves First Air-to-Air Kill

General Dan Caine, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, announced on July 22, 2026, that a Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet achieved its first air-to-air kill by shooting down a Russian fighter. Speaking during a congressional hearing, Caine described the engagement as evidence of Ukraine's expanding industrial base and its ability to scale layered air-defense capabilities.

While Caine did not specify the location or aircraft type, the announcement follows a July 8 claim by the Ukrainian Air Force that it downed a Russian Su-35. Ukraine began receiving F-16s in summer 2024 and has since used the jets to intercept crewed aircraft, missiles, and drones.

In a separate development, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Ukrainian strikes against Russian logistics centers in the Krasnodar and Stavropol regions. The Russian government denied that these facilities were being used for military purposes.
