NATO Ambassadors Visit Japan to Deepen Security Ties
NATO ambassadors visited Japan to strengthen defense cooperation as Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi seeks to expand the country's military capabilities and revise the constitution.
A delegation of approximately 30 ambassadors from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization visited Japan in April 2026 to deepen security and defense cooperation. The visit included meetings with Japanese Cabinet ministers, tours of defense companies, and a visit to the Yokosuka naval base.
The engagement comes as Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi works to expand Japan's military capabilities, increase defense spending, and revise the national constitution. The Government of Japan has also begun relaxing arms export restrictions to strengthen regional partnerships.
Observers suggest the cooperation allows Japan to manage security concerns regarding U.S. alliance commitments. However, critics argue that importing a NATO-style alliance model into the Asia-Pacific risks inciting bloc confrontation and destabilizing regional peace.
