U.S. Markets Recover After Hedge Fund Liquidation and Volatility
U.S. equity markets rebounded in August 2026 following a massive hedge fund liquidation and recent volatility driven by Middle East tensions.
U.S. equity markets recovered in August 2026 after a period of intense volatility triggered by the forced liquidation of the hedge fund Situational Awareness. On July 30, the fund sold its $16 billion public-equity portfolio to Citadel Securities after losing approximately 67% of its value in July. This event initially drove down semiconductor and AI stocks, but the removal of the forced seller led to a sharp rebound for companies like Super Micro Computer and Palantir, both of which rose 38.7% on strong AI demand.
Market stability was further supported by the Federal Reserve System maintaining its target range at 3.50%-3.75% on July 29. However, markets faced renewed pressure in late August due to U.S.–Iran hostilities and spiking oil prices. On Friday, August 21, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.7 percent to 53,133.34, and the S&P 500 climbed 0.4 percent to 7,671.91, as bargain hunting and a pullback in crude oil prices drove a partial recovery.
Investors remain cautious as they look toward next week's quarterly results from Nvidia and the upcoming Jackson Hole economic symposium. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is scheduled to speak at the symposium, an event that market participants expect will provide clarity on future economic policy.
