Trump Relaxes Beef Tariffs to Combat Record Consumer Prices

President Donald Trump relaxed tariffs on 300,000 metric tons of imported beef to lower consumer costs amid a historic domestic supply crisis.

Donald Trump relaxed tariffs on 300,000 metric tons of imported beef to lower consumer costs after the national average for sirloin reached $14.11 per pound. The move aims to alleviate price pressures on consumers, though U.S. cattle ranchers oppose the decision due to fears that increased imports will drive down animal prices.

Industry experts indicate that imports may not resolve the underlying supply crisis. A multiyear drought spanning 2021 to 2026 reduced the beef cow herd to its smallest inventory since 1961. To address this, the federal government expanded public grazing land access and increased efforts to combat wildlife predators, though these measures are not expected to provide immediate price relief.

High costs have already caused significant disruptions in the food service industry. McDonald's reported that beef prices are dragging down sales, while Wendy's closed more than 285 locations. Other affected businesses include Outback and Quaker Steak & Lube. In the processing sector, Tyson Foods closed plants and laid off hundreds of workers as profit margins became skewed.
