Trump Faces Lawsuit Over $20 Million Taxpayer-Funded Ads

President Donald Trump faces a DNC lawsuit for using $20 million in Homeland Security funds for partisan advertisements ahead of the midterm elections.

The Democratic National Committee has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia alleging that Donald Trump used taxpayer funds to produce illegal government-sponsored propaganda. The lawsuit targets a series of television advertisements that began airing in September, funded by $20 million allocated from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

While the White House characterizes the commercials as public service announcements, the ads feature combative political messaging and images of the president. One spot, titled "Final Battle," shows Trump pledging to "demolish the deep state" and "expel the warmongers" from the government. Despite an October 5 announcement that future ads would be funded by donations or his MAGA Inc. super PAC, a new advertisement promoting military actions in Venezuela aired Tuesday explicitly stating it was "paid for by the U.S. Government."

Critics, including the non-profit Public Citizen, argue the campaign violates federal laws prohibiting the use of public funds for self-aggrandizement or partisan advertising. Internal Republican friction has also emerged, with Senators John Thune and Mike Rounds criticizing the spending. A Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates 86 percent of Americans disapprove of the use of public funds for the videos. Amid declining poll numbers, Trump has further pledged a $5,000 payout to eligible voters if Republicans maintain their congressional majorities in the November 3 midterms.
