Babachir Lawal Claims Tinubu Bankrolled 2015 Campaign and Faced Depression

Former Secretary Babachir Lawal alleges President Bola Tinubu funded the 2015 APC campaign and suffered depression during the 2022 presidential primaries.

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal revealed in a Symfoni TV interview that President Bola Tinubu was the primary financial and strategic driver behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Muhammadu Buhari's 2015 victory. Lawal stated that Tinubu deferred his own presidential ambitions to unite the opposition against the Peoples Democratic Party and personally spent over 2 billion naira on the campaign, including hiring American political consultants and funding the activities of then-candidate Yemi Osinbajo.

Lawal also detailed internal turmoil preceding the 2022 APC presidential primary, claiming Tinubu experienced depression and fear regarding Buhari's stance. He alleged that Buhari initially resisted backing Tinubu due to ethical and religious concerns. Lawal claimed he negotiated a deal for Buhari to remain neutral to ensure a level playing field, while Bisi Akande intervened to dispel rumors that Buhari was endorsing other candidates.

Despite acknowledging Tinubu's foundational role in the APC, Lawal characterized the current administration as a failure. He alleged that government officials now prioritize self-interest over national welfare and claimed that Tinubu has lost his soul since taking office.
