French Navy Detains Sanctioned Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker
The French Navy detained the oil tanker DF Peak in the Indian Ocean for suspected false flag registration and illicit fuel transport.
The French Navy detained the oil tanker DF Peak on October 12, 2026, in the Indian Ocean, approximately 450 nautical miles south of Réunion Island. Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, announced the interception, stating the vessel was suspected of sailing under a false flag and engaging in illicit fuel transport activities as part of a Russian shadow fleet.
The DF Peak was previously operated by the Russian state-owned company Sovcomflot under the names NS Captain and Kaliningrad. While currently registered to Hong Kong Ding Feng Shipping and claiming registration in Benin, French authorities questioned the validity of its flag. The vessel is subject to sanctions from the European Union, United States, United Kingdom, and Ukraine.
Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin confirmed the tanker is under escort to Réunion for further inspection. This operation contrasts with a recent U.S. decision to pause sanctions on Russian diesel exports to lower fuel prices ahead of November midterm elections. Macron characterized the detention as a determination to uphold the rule of law and combat illicit trafficking in accordance with international maritime law.
