Florida Primary Voters Reject Establishment and Trump Endorsements
Florida voters snubbed establishment candidates and Donald Trump endorsements in several key primary races, including a major Democratic Senate upset by Angie Nixon.
Florida voters rejected establishment-backed candidates across several key primary races on August 18, 2026. In a major upset, Democratic socialist Angie Nixon won the Democratic primary for a Senate seat, defeating retired Lt. Col. Alex Vindman despite his $20 million fundraising advantage. Nixon secured more than 55 percent of the vote and will now face GOP Senator Ashley Moody in the general election.
Republican voters similarly snubbed endorsements from President Donald Trump in two House races. In the 19th District, businessman Jim Schwartzel won with 29.2% of the vote, defeating Trump-endorsed Catalina Lauf, who received 21.8%. In the 7th District, former television anchor Ryan Elijah defeated incumbent Representative Cory Mills by approximately 12 percentage points. Blaise Ingoglia, chair of the Republican Party of Florida, attributed these results to voter frustration with both parties and a demand for delivery on behalf of Americans.
Other races saw more traditional outcomes. Incumbent Democrat Lois Frankel won the 23rd District primary with roughly 75% of the vote, while Republican Deborah Adeimy secured her party's nomination with 73.7%. In the 11th District, results remained undecided Tuesday night, with Joe Strada leading the Republican race and James Pericola leading the Democratic field. Analysts suggest the overall trend reflects voter dissatisfaction with the economy and the ongoing war in Iran.
