China Celebrates 77th Anniversary with New Five-Year Plan Goals
President Xi Jinping and Hong Kong officials marked the 77th anniversary of the People's Republic of China with celebrations and new economic development roadmaps.
China marked the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 2026, with large-scale celebrations in Beijing and Hong Kong. In Beijing, Xi Jinping hosted a reception at the Great Hall of the People for 800 guests and attended a flag-raising ceremony at Tian'anmen Square with over 100,000 people. During the events, Xi praised the nation's social stability and outlined the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), which targets doubling per capita GDP from 2020 levels by 2035 and accelerating breakthroughs in core technologies.
Xi reaffirmed the one country, two systems policy for Hong Kong and Macao and called for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations to advance national reunification. The celebrations also included a Martyrs' Day ceremony and the presentation of the 2026 Chinese Government Friendship Award to 50 foreign experts.
In Hong Kong, the regional government held a flag-raising ceremony at Golden Bauhinia Square followed by a reception at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. Chief Executive John Lee described the implementation of Hong Kong's first five-year plan as a strategic roadmap to leverage the region's unique advantages under the one country, two systems framework to benefit from national development.
