Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Urges Fed to Maintain Open Mind

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged Federal Reserve policymakers to keep interest rates flexible, citing AI productivity and shifting Iranian oil dynamics.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged Federal Reserve policymakers to maintain an open mind regarding interest rates, arguing that deregulation and productivity gains from artificial intelligence will contain inflation. Speaking on Fox News, Bessent compared the current economic climate to the 1990s internet boom, suggesting the central bank should tolerate faster growth despite near-term inflation pressures.

Bessent identified elevated fuel costs, driven by the conflict with Iran and Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, as primary pressures weighing on voters ahead of the November midterm elections. This advocacy follows a recent benchmark rate hike overseen by Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh.

Regarding the conflict with Iran, Bessent stated that China has substantially reduced its assistance to Tehran. He estimated that 15 million barrels of Iranian oil remain in transit to China, with final deliveries expected within two weeks. Bessent suggested this reduction in support increases pressure on Iran to reach a deal concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
