EEOC Drops Subpoena for University of Pennsylvania Jewish Employee Lists

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) withdrew a subpoena on Thursday, July 24, 2026, that required the University of Pennsylvania to provide the names and personal contact information of its Jewish faculty and employees. The request was part of a federal probe by the Donald Trump administration into allegations that the university failed to address antisemitism and religious discrimination following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel.

The university had challenged the subpoena on privacy and First Amendment grounds. While a U.S. District Court had previously ruled the subpoena was enforceable, the EEOC informed the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that it was abandoning the request. In exchange, the University of Pennsylvania agreed to dismiss its appeal of the lower court's ruling.

University officials confirmed that no personal contact information was disclosed as a result of the dispute. Although the legal battle over the employee lists has ended, the EEOC's broader investigation into whether Jewish employees faced a hostile work environment at the institution remains ongoing.
