UK Fuel Prices Surge Amid Middle East Conflict

UK fuel prices have reached their highest levels since June due to shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and renewed US-Iran tensions.

UK fuel prices surged in early August, driven by supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and renewed conflict between the United States and Iran. Diesel prices rose 17% from a July 9 low to 181.5p per litre, making a typical 55-litre tank cost over £100. Petrol prices climbed 11% to 161.5p per litre, bringing the cost of a full tank to £89.

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, criticized oil companies for profiteering from the war with Iran, stating that companies are "making too much money based on a shortage" and should return those gains to the public.

Market analysts at the Royal Automobile Club suggest prices may stabilize or decrease following a dip in crude oil below $80 per barrel. However, the price spike has coincided with a rise in forecourt fuel thefts and increased aggression toward staff. The Petrol Retailers Association noted that these thefts disproportionately impact independent operators and small businesses rather than the energy giants whose branding they often use.
