Bank of Japan Schedules 2027 Meeting to Secure Hawkish Votes
The Bank of Japan scheduled its July 2027 policy meeting to ensure hawkish board members can vote on rate hikes before their terms expire.
The Bank of Japan scheduled its July 2027 policy meeting for the 21st and 22nd to ensure board members Naoki Tamura and Hajime Takata can vote before their terms expire on July 23. This strategic timing allows the central bank to potentially implement interest rate hikes before a board reshuffle that could shift the balance toward a more dovish stance.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi favors an accommodative monetary policy and has already appointed two reflationary proponents to the board. This creates a tension between the current board's trajectory and the Prime Minister's preference for easier monetary conditions.
Amid persistent inflation pressures, the central bank may raise rates as early as September 2026. Sources indicate the bank could continue aggressive hiking to reach a policy rate of 1.75% to 2%, an increase from the current 1% rate.
