German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is leading a diplomatic mission to Mauritania, Nigeria, and South Africa from July 21 to 22 to bolster security, energy, and trade cooperation. The tour aims to deepen European partnerships in Africa as European influence in the Sahel region wanes amid geopolitical instability.
In Mauritania, Wadephul is meeting with President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug to discuss renewable energy and regional stability. In Nigeria, the minister is visiting Abuja and Lagos to meet with Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray, and various business executives. These discussions focus on energy, raw materials, and the development of the ECOWAS electricity network.
The mission continues in South Africa, where Wadephul will meet President Cyril Ramaphosa and Foreign Minister Ronald Ozzy Lamola to advance a recently upgraded Strategic Partnership and address disinformation. The itinerary includes a speech at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and engagement with influencers in Lagos to target youth outreach.
Wadephul described the cooperation as crucial for Europe during the current "global geopolitical upheaval."
