Alabama Voters Cast Special Primaries Under Redrawn Maps
Alabama voters will select U.S. House nominees on August 12 following a Supreme Court ruling that forced the redrawing of congressional district boundaries.
Voters in four of Alabama's seven congressional districts will hold special primaries on Tuesday, August 12, 2026. Governor Kay Ivey postponed these elections from their original May 19 date following a Supreme Court of the United States decision that required several Republican-led Southern states to redraw their congressional maps.
The new boundaries, which become effective in January 2027, eliminate one of the state's two majority-Black districts. This redistricting is part of a broader Republican strategy championed by Donald Trump to secure a U.S. House majority during the 2026 midterm elections.
Democratic incumbents Shomari Figures and Terri Sewell are seeking reelection in their newly configured districts and face no opposition in their primaries. In the 2nd District, Donald Trump has endorsed Republican candidate Rhett Marques to challenge Shomari Figures.
