Canada Urges Citizens to Boycott American Products Over Tariffs
The Canadian government is urging citizens to boycott American products to protect domestic jobs and pressure the United States following a U.S. tariff offensive.
The Government of Canada is intensifying a campaign urging its citizens to boycott American products in response to a tariff offensive launched by U.S. President Donald Trump last year. Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and Industry Minister Melanie Joly are calling on Canadians to use their purchasing power to protect domestic jobs and apply economic pressure on the United States.
The movement has resulted in the removal of American wines and spirits from various provincial shelves and an increase in Canadian-origin labeling in retail stores. The boycott previously caused a 25 percent decline in Canadian tourism to the U.S., though recent data from Canada's statistics agency indicates a slight recovery, with trips increasing 5 percent in June compared to the previous year.
In response to the decline in visitors, New York state launched the "New York Loves Canada" initiative. The program uses promotions to attract Canadian tourists back to the region.
