Russia Targets Ukrainian Rail Network With Jet-Powered Drones

The Federal Government of Russia has intensified a strategic campaign of drone and missile strikes against Ukraine's rail network, targeting both fixed infrastructure and moving trains. Russian forces are deploying new jet-powered drones and networked mesh antennas to track and hit moving targets, a tactic designed to bypass Ukrainian electronic countermeasures.

Recent operations include a strike in the Kharkiv region that killed at least one person and injured seven, as well as a jet-powered drone strike on a locomotive near the Polish border. Since 2022, over 500 Ukrainian railway engines have been damaged or destroyed, with losses averaging 37 to 40 locomotives per month.

The Russian Ministry of Defense claims these targets are legitimate military logistics hubs transporting Western armaments. However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukrainian Railways officials state the attacks aim to paralyze the economy and terrorize the civilian population. Ukraine is currently attempting to bolster network protection and replace damaged rolling stock, though efforts are hindered by the difference between Ukrainian and European track gauges.
