Trump Claims Victory as U.S. and Iran Enter Active Combat

The United States and Iran have entered a period of active combat following the collapse of an April ceasefire. The escalation began after U.S. Central Command conducted operations inside Iran linked to the loss of an AH-64 Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched missile and drone strikes against 21 targets, including the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and the al-Azraq air base in Jordan.

Donald Trump escalated the conflict further by authorizing Tomahawk missile strikes near Tehran, a strategy Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth described as "negotiating with bombs." Trump used Truth Social to threaten the destruction of Iran, suggesting he would replicate strategies used in Venezuela. Retired General Joseph Votel noted that the conflict became increasingly unstable over a 72-hour period, arguing that the ceasefire was no longer an effective brake on escalation.

By June 12, Trump claimed in an interview with La7 that the U.S. had "won the war in Iran" and that the "Bully of the Middle East is DEAD!!!" He dismissed the need for G7 support ahead of their June summit as irrelevant. Conversely, Iranian adviser Mohsen Rezaei warned that military action would not strengthen the U.S. negotiating position and asserted that Washington must accept Iran's conditions or lose its international credibility. Despite the combat, both nations have maintained some diplomatic contacts to prevent a total regional war.
