NextEra Energy to Build 10GW Gas Power with Japanese Funding
NextEra Energy will develop 10 gigawatts of natural gas power in Texas and Pennsylvania using funding from a U.S.-Japan trade agreement.
NextEra Energy, Inc. has finalized agreements with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Government of Japan to develop and operate up to 10 gigawatts of natural gas-powered generation. The projects, located in Texas and Pennsylvania, were approved by President Donald Trump as part of a $550 billion investment commitment from Japan under the U.S.-Japan trade agreement.
NextEra Energy will lead the development, which includes the $17 billion South Mon project in Pennsylvania providing 4.3 gigawatts of power. An initial $3.3 billion funding tranche has been released for contractor selection and equipment down payments. The company expects initial resources to come online by the end of 2028, with full completion by 2032.
The initiative aims to support digital infrastructure and economic growth. To prevent residential consumers from bearing the costs, the projects adhere to the White House Ratepayer Protection Pledge. The company's strategy focuses on pairing large-load demand with dedicated generation to support critical infrastructure without increasing costs for American homes and businesses.
