APC Primary Contests: Celebrity Loses House Seat Bid, Presidential Challenger Emerges
Nigeria's ruling APC faces internal primary contests as celebrity candidate Pascal Okechukwu loses his House bid while Stanley Osifo challenges President Tinubu for the presidential ticket.
Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress is navigating competitive primary elections across multiple levels ahead of the 2027 general elections, with results revealing both the limits of celebrity candidacies and the persistence of internal challenges to incumbency. Pascal Okechukwu, the businessman and socialite known as Cubana Chief Priest, lost the APC primary for the Orsu/Orlu/Oru East Federal Constituency seat in Imo State to the incumbent representative Canice More Nwachukwu, who is serving his second term. Okechukwu, a former aide to Governor Hope Uzodinma and the Imo director of the City Boy Movement, had declared his political ambition in late April 2026. Supporters framed his candidacy as a push for youth inclusion, while critics contended that entertainment popularity does not translate to political leadership. The primary was conducted using the Option A4 voting system, and Okechukwu secured only 14 votes. Following his defeat, Okechukwu stated he did not regret contesting but expressed disappointment in community elders he had trusted and financially supported. Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, publicly encouraged Okechukwu on social media after the loss.
At the presidential level, Stanley Osifo has emerged as the sole challenger to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the APC presidential ticket. Speaking on ARISE News, Osifo pushed back against the assumption that Tinubu's incumbency guarantees him the party's nomination, stating that the outcome will be determined on election day and that the contest is not personal. Osifo emphasized that the APC remains a united family and that regardless of the result, both he and the president would continue working together in the party's interest, stressing that party unity and mutual respect outweigh individual political rivalry.
