Israeli Airstrikes Kill Hezbollah and Hamas Commanders in Lebanon and Gaza
The Israel Defense Forces conducted a series of strikes in southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, killing several senior militant commanders and dozens of civilians.
The Israel Defense Forces executed a series of airstrikes across southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip between August 15 and August 19, 2026, resulting in the deaths of several senior militant commanders and numerous civilians. In southern Lebanon, strikes in Ansar and Deir al-Zahrani killed at least 11 people, including three children and two women. The military identified the targets as Hezbollah commanders Ali Samir Al-Haj Hassan of the Radwan Force and Abu Hassan Alaa of the Badr regional division, stating the operations responded to drone and ground attacks that wounded three Israeli soldiers.
Simultaneously, Israeli forces targeted commanders in the Gaza Strip. A strike in Khan Yunis killed Tareq Anwar Khamis Ra'i, a company commander in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad supply unit. On August 19, a drone strike hit a café at Gaza Port west of Gaza City, killing six Palestinians. The military claimed the operation targeted Hamas company and platoon commanders planning attacks against Israeli troops.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and President Joseph Aoun condemned the Lebanon strikes, with Salam asserting that victims in Ansar were not military infrastructure. Hezbollah characterized the attacks as a massacre and vowed an appropriate response. In Gaza, Hamas accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of deliberately undermining mediation efforts following recent meetings in Cairo with U.S. envoy Jared Kushner. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that violations of the October 2025 ceasefire have killed 1,266 Palestinians and wounded 4,200 others.
