UN Security Council Debates Escalating West Bank Violence

The United Nations Security Council held an open debate on August 11, 2026, to address escalating Israeli settler violence in the occupied West Bank. The session followed reports from the UN human rights office that violence in the region has reached an "all-time high," with security forces and settlers frequently collaborating to attack Palestinian communities in the Jerusalem, Nablus, and Ramallah governorates.

Simultaneously, the Israeli army conducted multiple raids across the West Bank on Monday. These operations included the destruction of water pipelines in the Tubas governorate and the detention of two Palestinian brothers in the Jordan Valley. In Tell village, troops ordered residents to evacuate for the demolition of a home belonging to Farouq Ramadan, who was killed in July. Forces also set fire to agricultural land near Ramallah.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that Israeli settlements have no legal validity and represent a "flagrant violation" of international law. Data from the UN relief agency OCHA indicates that 1,122 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank between October 7, 2023, and July 24, 2026, while Palestinian officials report the death toll has exceeded 1,182 with nearly 24,000 arrests since October 2023.
