Wang Yi Proposes Four Strategic Goals at SCO Meeting

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held bilateral talks and proposed new strategic goals for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization during a ministerial meeting in Kyrgyzstan.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi proposed four strategic goals for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) during the Council of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan, on July 24, 2026. His proposals included upholding the "Shanghai Spirit," strengthening regional security through four security centers, enhancing Belt and Road cooperation, and establishing a model zone for global governance aligned with the United Nations Charter. He also highlighted the launch of seven cooperation platforms in sectors such as artificial intelligence and the digital economy.

On the sidelines of the summit, Wang Yi conducted a series of bilateral meetings. He met with Uzbek Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov to discuss the 10th anniversary of the China-Uzbekistan comprehensive strategic partnership and the completion of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway. Similarly, Wang Yi met with Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov to sign a 2026-2027 Consultation Plan. Both Uzbekistan and Belarus were recognized as founding members of the newly established World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization.

On July 24, Wang Yi also met with Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin. The two officials focused on implementing the China-Tajikistan Treaty on Permanent Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation resulting from President Emomali Rahmon's state visit to China in May. The ministers pledged to advance cooperation in energy, connectivity, and counterterrorism to strengthen their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
