Pakistan Government and PTI Agree to Talks Before Long March

The Government of Pakistan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf agreed to hold talks on October 2 to defuse tensions ahead of a planned October 4 protest march.

The Government of Pakistan and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have agreed to hold talks on October 2 at the office of National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. The meeting follows a decision by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to send a joint government-Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) delegation, including Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Senator Sherry Rehman, to negotiate with the opposition.

The dialogue aims to prevent a planned PTI long march toward Islamabad scheduled for October 4. The PTI is demanding the release of its founder, Imran Khan, and the restoration of constitutional supremacy. While PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan accepted the invitation, he refused to cancel the protest, stating that the march will proceed peacefully unless specific demands for justice and medical treatment for Imran Khan are met.

Tensions remain high as the federal government considers imposing governor's rule or a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, citing a deteriorating security situation and terrorism. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has vowed to resist such measures and launched a fundraising campaign to support the long march. In response, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari urged the PTI to end the march unconditionally, while government officials warned they would block participants from entering the capital if the protest continues.
