UK Bans Disposable Barbecues Amid Record Heat and Wildfires

The Government of the United Kingdom imposed a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues across England, Scotland, and Wales on August 14, 2026. The measure follows a surge in wildfires and a record-breaking summer where temperatures reached 38.1C at Kew Gardens. Officials identified single-use grills as a primary cause of multiple blazes, leading the government to declare them a significant risk to the public and environment.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham triggered the UK's emergency mobile alert system at 7 p.m. on August 14, warning millions in England and Wales of a very high wildfire risk. This action followed a catastrophic fire in Stourbridge, West Midlands, which destroyed 19 homes and spread across 500 acres. To combat the crisis, Burnham deployed 100 military personnel to incident areas and announced plans to commission firefighting planes.

Earlier in the week, Burnham chaired an emergency Cobra meeting to coordinate responses to a flash drought affecting 71.3% of England. The government also allocated £97 million to upgrade firefighting capabilities. While major retailers like Tesco and Asda had already voluntarily suspended sales of disposable grills, the statutory ban now mandates the removal of these products from both physical and online stores until further notice.

Communities Secretary Angela Rayner announced a forthcoming summit with fire chiefs and the Fire Brigades Union to evaluate future responses.
