Japan Requests Record 36.6 Trillion Yen for Debt Servicing

The Ministry of Finance of Japan is seeking a record 36.6 trillion yen for debt-servicing costs amid rising bond yields and new fiscal policies.

The Ministry of Finance of Japan has requested a record ¥36.6 trillion ($230 billion) for debt-servicing costs in its initial budget request for the next fiscal year. This figure represents a 17% increase over the current allocation of ¥31.28 trillion, with ¥16.6 trillion earmarked for interest payments and ¥20 trillion for debt redemptions.

The surge in costs is driven by climbing bond yields and a provisional interest rate of 3.8%, the highest level seen in nearly 30 years. Market pressure is linked to the fiscal agenda of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, which includes a growth strategy and a planned sales tax cut that lacks specified funding sources.

Overall budget requests are expected to exceed ¥130 trillion for the first time. This increase reflects a shift in strategy by Takaichi to prioritize comprehensive initial budget packages rather than relying on the traditional use of supplementary budgets.
