Trump Bans Anthropic After AI Guardrail Dispute

President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to cease using Anthropic's Claude AI and designated the company a supply chain risk in early March 2026. The decision followed a breakdown in negotiations with the Department of War, where Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei refused to remove ethical guardrails prohibiting the use of AI for fully autonomous lethal weapons and mass domestic surveillance. Trump characterized the company's stance as an attempt to "strong-arm" the military, subsequently ordering a six-month phase-out of its technology across the government.

Despite the ban, the U.S. Central Command continued using Claude for intelligence and target identification during strikes in Iran and an operation to capture Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. One such strike in Minab, Iran, resulted in 168 deaths at a school, fueling scrutiny of AI's role in targeting. Meanwhile, the Department of War canceled a $200 million contract with Anthropic and signed a deal with OpenAI to deploy ChatGPT in classified environments. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman later admitted the timing of the deal appeared "opportunistic and sloppy" amid employee protests and a consumer boycott led by QuitGPT.

Industry groups and former officials have condemned the supply chain risk designation—typically reserved for foreign adversaries—as a dangerous precedent that weakens U.S. competitiveness. While Amodei alleged the administration's hostility was political retribution for a lack of "dictator-style praise" for the president, he has since entered last-ditch negotiations with Under Secretary Emil Michael to resolve the dispute. Defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin, have already begun purging Anthropic tools to comply with the directive.
