Senate Omits SAVE Act While Budget Deadlines Loom

The U.S. Senate has omitted the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act from its current agenda as lawmakers prepare for recess. The legislation, which would require proof of U.S. citizenship for federal election registration, was sidelined by leadership to prioritize Senate Budget Committee hearings.

John Thune, the Senate Majority Leader, is focusing on the budget process over the SAVE Act. Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana confirmed that leadership does not intend to prioritize the legislation at this time. While the Senate recently released a stopgap funding bill to keep the government operational through December, lawmakers remain divided over a final budget resolution.

Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas urged the Senate to remain in session until a budget resolution is passed and settled. Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin noted that a vote on the resolution could potentially occur within the week.
