Hannah Pingree Leads Maine Governor Race as Senate Contest Tightens

Democratic candidate Hannah Pingree holds a significant lead in the race for Governor of Maine, with a New York Times/Portland Press Herald/Siena poll placing her at 48% support. Republican Bobby Charles follows at 36%, while independent Rick Bennett trails at 8%. Pingree, a former Maine House Speaker, has raised over $4 million as she seeks to succeed term-limited Governor Janet Mills.

Rick Bennett, a former Republican state senator and party chair, is campaigning as a non-partisan alternative to party leadership and special interests. Despite low polling, Bennett has received endorsements from former U.S. Senator Bill Cohen and former U.S. Representative Mike Michaud, and is currently conducting a walking tour of the state to attract disaffected voters.

Meanwhile, the race for the U.S. Senate is significantly more competitive. A University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll shows Democrat Troy Jackson with a narrow 51% to 47% lead over Republican Senator Susan Collins, though researchers describe the race as statistically tied. A separate New York Times and Siena University poll places Collins with a three-point lead.

Senator Collins has emphasized her leadership as chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee to benefit Maine. However, she faces scrutiny over her voting record regarding Donald Trump and a ProPublica report alleging a past FBI investigation into a potential pay-to-play arrangement involving a super PAC and defense contractor Navatek. Collins denies any wrongdoing, asserting she was cleared years ago.
