Trump Promotes AI Data Centers Amid Growing Local Opposition

President Donald Trump is promoting the proliferation of AI data centers, characterizing them as money machines and cash cows essential for maintaining technological dominance over China. He argues these facilities create jobs, increase property values, and reduce taxes, stating that any community rejecting AI is making a big mistake. To mitigate public anxiety over rising electricity costs, the administration launched the Ratepayer Protection Pledge in March, encouraging developers to voluntarily prevent construction from raising utility bills.

Despite federal advocacy, widespread community opposition has grown. More than 100 jurisdictions, including areas in Maryland, Minnesota, and Iowa, have approved moratoriums to evaluate infrastructure and zoning impacts. Public concerns center on massive energy and water requirements, the loss of farmland, and potential job displacement. This sentiment is reflected in polls from Gallup and Pew Research Center, as well as proposed bans in 15 states and recent primary victories for candidates supporting construction halts in Kansas, Michigan, and Ohio.

While a Realtor.com analysis shows home sales within five miles of large data centers more than doubled between 2018 and 2026, the facilities are increasingly moving into lower-income rural areas. In response to the backlash, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton has urged the administration to investigate whether foreign adversaries are manipulating public opinion to undermine American AI development.
