New York City is terminating the employment of dozens of Haitian city workers following the expiration of their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) on July 24. Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York City, announced the dismissals on Friday, stating the city must comply with federal law after a Supreme Court ruling enabled President Donald Trump to end humanitarian protections for Haitian immigrants.
City officials warned that while dozens of employees are currently affected, the number of terminations could eventually reach the hundreds. Mayor Mamdani called on President Trump to restore the status to protect the city's economy and benefit New Yorkers.
The city pledged to provide affected workers with support services, including free legal consultations and assistance navigating health insurance. The municipal government also noted that workers could be reinstated if they obtain new work authorization.
