President Donald Trump and industry leaders designated coal as a strategic source of rare earth elements and critical minerals during the Champion of Coal event at the White House on February 12, 2026. The administration intends to expand the utility of coal beyond traditional power generation to secure domestic supplies necessary for shipbuilding, advanced manufacturing, and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Jim Grech, CEO of Peabody Energy, stated that the company is collaborating with the administration to build new coal-fueled power plants. Grech emphasized the vast scale of U.S. reserves, claiming that the United States possesses more energy in its coal than any other single energy source in any other nation.
