Trump Proposes Paying Dividends to Citizens Using Tariff Revenue

Donald Trump plans to use tariff revenues to pay citizen dividends and reduce national debt, though Treasury officials and budget analysts warn of legislative and financial hurdles.

President Donald Trump announced a plan during a Tuesday cabinet meeting to utilize tariff revenues to pay dividends to American citizens and reduce the national debt. Trump proposed providing refunds from tariffs, suggesting a dividend of at least $2,000 per person and speculating that income taxes could eventually be eliminated due to the high volume of revenue collected.

White House spokesman Kush Desai defended the strategy, asserting that tariffs will raise trillions in revenue paid by foreign exporters who rely on the American consumer market. However, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent cautioned that such dividends would require legislation and suggested the payments might instead be delivered as existing tax breaks.

Nonpartisan financial analysis indicates a discrepancy in the administration's projections. The Congressional Budget Office downgraded its projections of tariff-driven deficit reduction to $3 trillion. Additionally, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimated that annual $2,000 dividends could increase deficits by $6 trillion over a decade, which is roughly double the projected tariff revenue.
