Rupee Drops as Trump Rejects Iranian Peace Proposal
The Indian rupee nears 96 per dollar as oil prices spike following Donald Trump's rejection of an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The Indian rupee is facing significant downward pressure, approaching the 96-per-dollar threshold, following a spike in global oil prices. The volatility follows a decision by Donald Trump to reject an Iranian proposal aimed at resolving conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. In response to the stalled talks, Brent crude climbed 2.5 percent to approximately $107 a barrel.
The currency's decline is further compounded by a strengthening U.S. dollar and rising U.S. Treasury yields. Robust U.S. economic data has increased market expectations for an interest rate hike in October, adding further pressure to the rupee.
To stabilize the currency, the Reserve Bank of India has repeatedly intervened in the markets to prevent the rupee from sustaining a dip past the 96-per-dollar mark.
