Trump Voter List Order Blocked by Court Injunction

An executive order issued by Donald Trump directing the United States Postal Service to withhold mail-in ballots from states that do not provide eligible voter lists or adopt uniform envelope styles is currently blocked by a broad court injunction. The order also tasks the U.S. Department of Homeland Security with compiling a master list of eligible voters to determine ballot delivery.

On August 24, the Supreme Court of the United States gave preliminary approval to the order on procedural grounds, ruling that Democratic-led states challenging the directive lacked legal standing. However, the court did not rule on the order's constitutionality. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, stating the decision "needlessly injects chaos and uncertainty" into the election. The administration is currently appealing a separate judge's decision to temporarily halt the order's implementation.

Parallel to the legal battle, the House of Representatives passed the SAVE Act, which would require in-person documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration. The bill remains stalled in the Senate. Meanwhile, progressive organizations and Democrats Abroad Canada are mobilizing an estimated 600,000 eligible U.S. citizens living in Canada to vote in the November 3 midterms. These efforts coincide with the scheduled September 4 mailing of the first ballots for military and overseas voters from North Carolina.
