Macron Secures Qatar LNG Deal to Lower French Energy Prices
President Emmanuel Macron secured a monthly LNG supply from Qatar to stabilize French energy prices and address domestic protests amid shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
President Emmanuel Macron announced in Doha that France will receive 2 terawatt-hours of liquefied natural gas per month from Qatar during the winter. This supply represents roughly 7% of France's average monthly gas usage and is intended to curb soaring energy prices and replenish dwindling stockpiles that have sparked violent protests in Paris and other cities.
Transporting the fuel remains difficult due to the US-Iran war, which has disrupted the Strait of Hormuz, increased insurance costs, and reduced shipment volumes. To counter these challenges, France is developing a new insurance mechanism for ships in the region and implementing safety improvements for tankers.
Beyond energy, France secured diesel commitments from three Middle Eastern producers. Macron also reached agreements with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to upgrade Rafale fighter jets and procure new armored vehicles, missiles, and radars.
